Kriegsmarine – The Iron Fleet of the Reich
Guardians of the Atlantic and Beyond
By 1946, the Kriegsmarine, the naval arm of the Greater Germanic Reich, has transformed from a primarily coastal defense force into a powerful global navy, thanks to the conquest of the British Isles and the fall of the Soviet Union. With strategic access to ports across Europe and the North Sea, the Kriegsmarine now serves as a vital component of Germany’s Cold War posture against the United States and its Pacific allies.
Leadership: Großadmiral Karl Dönitz
Following the successful execution of Operation Sea Lion and the expansion of Germany's naval territories, Karl Dönitz, architect of the U-boat wolfpack strategy, rose to the rank of Großadmiral (Grand Admiral). He now commands a modernized and far-reaching Kriegsmarine.

Dönitz is a staunch nationalist and a strategic thinker. Under his leadership, the navy prioritizes:
- Submarine Dominance: U-boats patrol the Atlantic, disrupting American supply lines and monitoring Allied maritime activity.
- Carrier Development: Captured British carriers and naval infrastructure have enabled the development of Germany's first true aircraft carrier fleet.
- Naval Aviation Integration: Increasing collaboration with the Luftwaffe for coastal and maritime aerial superiority.
- Arctic and Baltic Expansion: Bases in Norway and Karelia offer critical positioning for Northern operations.
Fleet Composition in 1946
- U-boat Wolfpacks: Still the core of the Kriegsmarine’s asymmetric warfare capabilities.
- Battleships & Heavy Cruisers: The Tirpitz, Bismarck II, and Seydlitz-class cruisers patrol the North Atlantic.
- Carrier Strike Groups: Based in occupied Britain and Norway, providing a forward naval presence.
- Auxiliary and Occupation Fleet: Maintains control over colonial shipping lanes in Africa and the Black Sea.
Strategic Role
As tensions rise between the Reich and the United States, the Kriegsmarine is tasked with ensuring naval dominance across the Atlantic, protecting German shipping, and projecting power from the Arctic Circle to the western shores of Africa.
While overshadowed in prestige by the Waffen-SS and Luftwaffe, the Kriegsmarine remains a cornerstone of German global reach—silent, efficient, and always lurking beneath the waves.
